Investigating audio

sound is anything that can be heard through soundwaves. sound is broken into two parts diegetic and non-diegetic. this can be further broken into five main sections of sound/audio which are dialogue, Foley, sound effects, background and music. sound is used to change moods within films such as a faced pace beat could be for an action scene whereas a slow subtle beat for a sad or romantic scene. this is why sound has a high importance for many reasons.

this video shows how sound and music can be combined to make a more cinematic scene and interactive for the audience as well as exterior sounds used as effects such as the gun fires. within the scene you can see the Foley being used for many things such as glass breaking and bullet shots and gun magazine. there is also some ambience for a city surrounding with car noises and sirens.

Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds

Diegetic sounds are sounds that come from within the narrative of a film such as character voices, radio, objects etc. these sounds are used to provide the foundational sounds of a film. its simply sounds that come from the story world.

Non-diegetic sounds are sounds that don't originate within the film world such as background music, effects sounds, character thoughts, etc. these are added in during the post-production while editing for the final results.

Foley- this is sound effects made by a Foley artist imitating a real sound such as bones breaking= celery snap. Foley is used for many reasons one main reason being the sounds cannot be real for ethical issues.

dialogue- this is the speech a character says in the visuals which is known as dialogue. an example is mike "where are you going" this is said by mike and therefore is dialogue.

ambience- this is the sound that is added to create a more realistic environment such as if there is rain in the visuals the ambience would have maybe trickles of rain in an industrial environment.

sound effects- this are a range of effects from computerised to manually created sounds that bring a more dramatic and entertaining effect to the production. its very useful and commonly used with the more enhanced tech production companies are getting.

music- this is simply either a background or main music/song in a production. it consists of beats, sound effect and maybe dialogue but its often the lyrics. music is used in almost every movie, song, show etc.
